On the evening of September 20, 1777, British forces mounted a surprise attack, often referred to as 'The Paoli Massacre', on a small encampment posted at the Paoli Tavern in Malvern. In order to keep their approach a secret, the British Regulars were ordered to omit gunpowder in their muskets and attack with fixed bayonets and no quarter was to be granted. Although the majority of the Colonial force would escape, the event would be used by propagandists to enlist new ranks to the revolution angered by what was printed in Philadelphia newspapers as a slaughter.
